The other problem is that although as per our review the higher end, larger suites are really, really nice (they better be for $4,000+ per night right now) the ”regular” room we tried the second night - for $3,000+ a night - has some shortcomings that just aren’t acceptable in this price range: besides it feeling cramped, there are details like the bed linens feeling like sandpaper or the minibar being so loud it would wake us up. If it was easy to get in and out of the resort we would forgive the lack of a proper breakfast more, but between waiting for the golf cart and then the valet and then the road to town it’s definitely not awesome to have to go offsite every morning for breakfast. The in room breakfast was a la carte, but somehow worse… our order was messed up and our eggs benedict was inedible - used old avocado (already brown) and over cooked eggs. They even refused to freshly prepare scrambled eggs at our taste, they told us the only option was the dry scrambled eggs that had been sitting out for a while. After our first night we tried the onsite restaurant, to find that it only offers a buffet - no a la carte like every single other property in this class we have ever stayed in. That is obscene in a town know for its amazing food you can have a better breakfast in hotels in town that go for 1/4th of the nightly rates for similarly sized rooms. The first one is that the breakfast options - both at the restaurant on site and the in room dining - are easily the worst we have every experienced in a property in this price range. But unfortunately there are also some major negative changes that mean we are not coming back. In the 4 months since our last stay, the Montage’s management has done a spectacular job improving the service quality… in fact pretty much everything negative we mention in that review has been fixed. First stay was in May, you can find it here. This was our second stay at this property, and second review. There are much nicer, less expensive places to stay in wine country. When we checked out, no one asked how our stay was or thanked us for staying. The room felt pretty small and there were dirty dishes outside our room from the room next door that were never picked up for almost our entire stay. Appetizer had no flavor, but the soup was good. And the meal was just so so for the price. $10 just to play music on the tv which is normally free with regular cable, ridiculous, The breakfast buffet was really disappointing, the eggs, oatmeal and bacon were cold and when we had dinner at the same restaurant which also was very expensive, the wait staff was very nice, but we had to ask for plates for our appetizers and silverware. From having to wait so long for the car service to town that we ended up driving, so we wouldn’t miss our reservation to having to walk down a steep hill to get to the lobby with no path down because when we called for carts it took too long, to being charged $15 for a small bag of potato chips in the room, it was not worth the over $2,000 a night price. We had a ridiculously overpriced stay for what we received. We have stayed at many high end/ luxury resorts in Wine country and this was by far the most expensive and least worth it.
